Founded in 1975 as Artist Union, AU is comprised of artists from a wide range of fields, including painters, critics,
and architects who were active in the 1960s, and has continued to carry on the trends of postwar Japanese avant-garde art, including Gutai.
In 1976, Shozo Shimamoto was appointed as the executive director, and in accordance with this spirit of "doing what no one else has done",
the organization has continued to promote creative art to the world,
and has established itself as an organization that expresses the freedom and infinite possibilities of artistic expression.
In 1980, the name was changed from Arteist Union to Art Unidentified, and although there are many aspects of the organization that are immature,
it has become a fertile ground for new creations, and even after Shimamoto's death, the organization continues to carry on that spirit.
